Leading insurer GIO, and
Green Cross Australia, are joining to bring a series of Storm Season Community Forums to regional NSW, including the Tweed, during June.
The Tweed’s forum will be held in Murwillumbah on Thursday, June 16 at 10.30am at the Murwillumbah Golf Club in Byangum Road.
Hosted by Green Cross, and supported by GIO Insurance, these free community forums aim to raise awareness about severe weather trends, storm preparedness and green response.
“Storm Season Community Forums were designed for communities throughout regional NSW to share information about what the coming storm season means and the ways community members can act together and prepare,” Green Cross CEO Mara Bun explained.
“Our objective is to lead discussion about how communities can work together to be better prepared for storms and plan for how we can recover more effectively afterwards,” Mara said.
Each session will cover a range of topics – from what the coming storm season may be like, to rebuilding after major weather events, the practical steps you can take to protect your home and the value of rebuilding green to save on energy bills and cut greenhouse emissions.
Tweed Shire Council and SES will also provide information at the forum.
David Devine, GIO Murwill-umbah, explained that recent research by GIO revealed that many NSW residents are yet to heed the lessons learned from past storms experience.
“It’s definitely a concern that, of the NSW respondents whose homes suffered storm damage in recent years, just less than half (48 per cent) has made any changes to better prepare their homes against future damage,” David said.
“These forums are about taking positive steps towards storm preparedness and under-standing the practical ways communities can protect themselves.
“GIO Insurance is very pleased to work with Green Cross Australia to help NSW communities to prepare for the coming storm season,” David said.
