HER boyfriend has just been hit over the head and thrown in the back of a car so we think Winners and Losers character Frances James might know a bit about self destructing.
So it’s probably hardly surprising that her alter-ego Virginia Gay has called her new cabaret show Songs To Self Destruct To.
With the popular Prime Seven television show currently in hiatus, Virginia is back to her other love – cabaret – and on her way to The Basement at The Arts Centre, Gold Coast on Saturday 14 December.
She is coming direct from sell-out shows at this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival, this show is not to be missed.
So what is this all about ?
“Don’t be distracted by the title, it’s probably my cheeriest show to date,” Viginia admitted.
“It’s about finding humour and joy through the rough times. It’s about what we do to get through, and what a triumph it is when we do. It’ll be a lark!”
It’s all the songs that you’ve ever loved and lost to, all the weep-fests you’ve played as you’ve clung to the sinking wreck of a relationship, everything that’s ever killed your dog, sent your baby away and turned you to drink, drugs and despair … given a new glittering life as cheerful, upbeat sing-a-longs!
Roll your pain in sequins and teach it to high-kick! Navigate the frightening, lonely hours between midnight and dawn with Australia’s favourite foul-mouthed femme fatale Virginia Gay as she takes you through a dozen self-harming toe-tappers, her best-loved wrist-slitting ditties, with all the pep of black coffee, cigarettes and a bottle full of uppers.
Get excited, in a one-too-many-No-Doze kinda way, about a set list that includes Nothing Compares to You, a mash-up of Mr Sandman and Metallica’s Enter Sandman, and Kasey Chamber’s Am I Not Pretty Enough? which finally answers all those late night, kebab-clutching, gutter-sitting questions – is my heart too broken? Do I cry too much? Yes! Yes, you do! Now, sit back and relax … it’s show time …
