Regional library book borrowing goes high tech

Richmond Tweed Regional Library has begun to celebrate National Year of Reading 2012 by giving library members access to their exciting new expanded eResources service.
Current and classic eBooks are now available to download from the library’s website. Library members can check out, download and enjoy titles from the comfort of home via digital media anytime, anywhere by visiting www.rtrl.nsw.gov.au.
Users may browse the library’s website, check out with a valid library card, and download to PC, Mac®, and many mobile devices. Users will need to install free software Adobe® Digital Editions to read eBooks.
Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod®, Sony® Reader™, and many others. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees!
“This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free for library members and will compliment our existing suite of e-resources which includes eAudiobooks and music downloads. To get started with eBooks, and more visit www.rtrl.nsw.gov.au” Richmond Tweed Regional Library Manager Jo Carmody said.
She said OverDrive is a leading full-service digital distributor of eBooks which delivers secure management, DRM protection, and download fulfilment services for hundreds of publishers and thousands of libraries, schools, and retailers serving millions of end users.
“There are lots of libraries now in Australia that have eBooks, it’s generally the larger libraries like ourselves which can finance it though as it is still cost prohibitive to many,” Jo said.
“It’s certainly a case of libraries answering to the trends and demands of the customers, the interest and enquiries are growing rapidly by the day, particularly as many people received new portable devices for Christmas.”
She said while the method of delivery differs from the long established way of doing things– digital not paper backs – the time limit is still the same with the DRM activating the deletion of the book from your device on the due date..but you can renew and you can re borrow.
“It’s also the same in that only one person can borrow an item so it will say on loan so when you reserve the item it will send you an email when it is available, so it’s not that different to the normal system. We are going to keep an eye on the trends and if we need to buy more copies of a title we will.”
