IF you know a young person making a difference in the Tweed Community, now is the time to nominate them for this year’s Tweed Shire Kids in Community Awards.
Nominations for the third-annual awards will close on Friday 20 September and Tweed mayor Barry Longland is urging everyone to get involved and nominate someone.
“Having attended the gala awards ceremony for KIC in past years, I am well aware of the fantastic contribution being made by many young people in the Tweed community,” Councillor Longland, said.
“There’s no age limit on caring, leadership, advocacy and creativity and many of our young people are strengthening and inspiring others through their contributions,” he said.
“Whether they’re assisting the homeless, enriching our culture through creative pursuits or inspiring others through their leadership, our young people are helping to building a better future.
“I encourage any young person who’s making a difference in their community to enter these awards or to nominate someone they know,” he said.
The Awards, now in their fourth year in the Tweed, are funded by local businesses. They highlight the significant work and achievements young people (13-25) are making in our community.
The Award categories are: Caring for others; Celebrating our cultural diversity; Serving our community; Raising for charity; Enriching community life; Leading their peers; Achieving against all odds; Protecting our planet; Adults supporting youth (26+) and Media promoting youth.
A gala awards ceremony will be held at Twin Towns Services Club on 20 November.
Council’s community development officer – youth, Sylvia Roylance, is a member of the KIC steering committee.
“It’s always inspiring to hear about the commitment and achievement of our young people, who are prepared to give so much of their time to help and enrich the lives of others,” Ms Roylance said.
