Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot has encouraged eligible not-for-profit organisations to apply for Australian Government Volunteer Grants of up to $5000.
“The Volunteer Grants program is a great way to directly support volunteers who selflessly give up their time to help people,” Justine said.
Grants between $1000 and $5000 are available to help eligible not-for-profit organisations purchase needed equipment and contribute to volunteers’ fuel costs, training courses and background checks.
“Seventy-two organisations received $240,712 on the North Coast in Volunteer Grants in 2010 which supported hundreds of volunteers.
“In 2010 the funding helped many volunteer groups expand or continue delivering their vital services. For example the Tweed Coast Raiders JRL Inc received $1510 to conduct training courses, the Murwillumbah Rural Fire Brigade received $4800 to upgrade the office equipment, and funds also helped the Bangalow Men’s Bowling Club who received $2220 so that they may continue to provide services to their members through purchases of much needed equipment,” Justine said.
The Volunteer Grants 2011 program will provide practical and tangible support to community organisations across Australia to assist volunteers and encourage more people to take up volunteering.
Applications close at 5pm (AEST) on June 8, 2011. To apply visit www.fahcsia.gov.au or call 1800 183 374.
