THE Tweed Coolangatta Blues is anticipating a big year in 2014 with all of its age group teams competing in the AFL Gold Coast Juniors division one competitions.
Speaking at the junior AFL club’s annual general meeting, re-elected president Barry Bennett said some important achievements in 2013 had laid the groundwork for more growth after players numbers jumped more than 20 per cent this year.
“Tweed Shire Council handed over the keys to the newly constructed Greenway Drive Sports Pavilion at Banora Point in January for the club’s exclusive use during the football season,” Mr Bennett said.
“This has been a fantastic venue for all our junior level teams to play.
“This venue has also been utilised for Auskick campaigns during the year and has been a success with our Auskick numbers up nearly 20 per cent from last year, thank you to the assistance of AFLQ and AFLGCJ.”
Mr Bennett said the under-12 and under-16 teams enjoyed the best on-field results, with both teams reaching the elimination finals stage of their respective competitions.
“Other great news and a first for our club is the introduction of an all-girls team, the Bluebirds, in 2013,” Mr Bennett said.
“The club has been promoting this new format and hopes to have two age groups for girls in 2014.”
Also at the AGM, treasurer Sally Engel was re-elected while vice-president Craig Salisbury moved in to the role of club secretary.
John Gemmell was appointed to the committee as coaching director, Lorraine Cherry was elected as the club registrar and new committee member Ron Goodman was elected vice-president.
