Green and Gold battle for glory

Junior Cricket with Odette Quine

THE battle for Cudgen supremacy in the Tweed District Cricket under-12 competition is set to go right down to the wire next week.
Cudgen Green and Gold are locked together after day one of their match at Kingscliff at the weekend.
Green batted first and scored a respectable 4/121 from their 24 overs, led by some outstanding batting from both Jayden McNamara and Hugh Easterbrook.
In reply, Gold reached 108 with K. Aiken finishing the day’s play on 29 not out. It looks like a close game which can see either team take home the points.
In the other under-12 match Murwillumbah hosted Pottsville, and after being sent in to bat Murwillumbah ended their 24 overs on 5/106 with a good all-round batting performance.
It was then up to Pottsville to chase the total. They finished their 24 overs on the figures of 4/105.
This game could hardly be closer and the stage is now set for what should be an exciting finish this Saturday
Pottsville will be looking for a home-ground win when they resume day two of their under-14 Ballina District Competition clash against Lennox Head next week.
Playing their first home game of the season Pottville were out to prove a point playing host to Lennox Head. The home team won the toss and elected to bat. At the change of innings Pottsville were on 3/67, with not out batsman R. Lillis (14) and T. Spencer (7) to continue on batting next week.
In reply Lennox managed 91 runs however at the cost of six wickets with A. Bourne finishing with the figures of 1/10 and T. Spencer 1/4. With plenty of quality batsman to come for Pottsville they will be pushing for victory on the second day this Saturday.
In the other under-14 game, Murwillumbah won the toss and batted in their home game against Bangalow. Murwillumbah reached a total of 5/119 at the change of innings with another outstanding batting performance from Ashton Wilson, retired on 42. Sam Cook on an unbeaten 19 and Drew Reynolds on 11 will continue batting this Saturday.
In reply Bangalow passed the Murwillumbah total and finished the day on 6/132.
Outstanding bowling from Ashton Wilson who ended on figures of 2/6 and Sam Cook with 2/14 helped keep the total down.
An under-strength Cudgen will look to stave off an outright defeat when they resume their under-16 Ballina District Competition match against a red-hot Byron Bay team next week.
With a few of Cudgen’s key players missing, they could only muster up 67 in their first innings with Kyle Lohman 21, Connor Ziebell and Reece Perram both reaching 13.
In reply Byron were 70 runs for the loss of only one wicket, taken by Ryan Lahrs. Cudgen will be hoping for a better day this Saturday so as to not loss on outright.
In the remaining under-16 match Mullum/Murbah travelled to Lennox to take on the much-fancied Lennox team. Having won the toss and deciding to bat Mullum/Murbah reached a respectable total of 168.
The devastation was to hit at the end of the day with Lennox having to face six overs to complete the days play. The name of the destroyer was Tom McMahon who took four quick wickets to have Lennox reeling 4/9. Mullum/Murbah look like taking first innings points in this game, although cricket is a funny game.
