Cailin Smyth of Banora Point has gained entry into a Bachelor of Nursing at Southern Cross University after completing a Certificate III in Health Service Assistance at Kingscliff
TAFE while she was still at school.
Cailin began her Certificate III in Health Service Assistance at Kingscliff
TAFE in 2010 while she was in year 11 at St Joseph’s College at Banora point.
She undertook her TAFE studies every Monday afternoon throughout year 11 and 12, completing the course at the end of 2011.
As part of her studies Cailin learned about legal and ethical issues in health care, effective communication strategies, anatomy and physiology and occupational health and safety.
She also studied a range of health problems and participated in work placement at John Flynn private hospital at Tugun.
As a result of her studies Cailin received early entry into a Bachelor of Nursing at Southern Cross Universities Tweed campus.
“Early entry has meant I have a lot more time to plan and with an additional recognised qualification on leaving school I can work in the health care industry whilst I am at university”, Cailin said.
According to Anthony Rogers, Head Teacher of Health, Aged Care, Nursing and First Aid, the course has proved very successful.
“Many other graduates of this program have gone straight into employment as an Assistant in Nursing, gained entry to the Enrolled Nursing program or, like Cailin, are about to commence training as a registered nurse or midwife at local universities,” he said.
