Local Government Week celebrations

Want to know more about your local council? This year’s Local Government Week celebrations in the Tweed are packed with fun events, interesting behind-the-scenes tours and informative workshops.
Local Government Week is an important event that aims to build a greater understanding of the role of local government in the community and the range of facilities and services provided by Tweed Shire Council.
There will be two official openings on Tuesday, November 20 – the Tyalgum Water Treatment Plant (11am to noon); and the new Museum collection store at South Murwillumbah (3.30pm to 4.30pm). Tweed Mayor, Councillor Barry Longland, will do the honours at both events.
A workshop for community event organisers will be held on Wednesday, November 21 (10am to noon) in Murwillumbah, with topics including food safety for events, mapping for film and event applications, changes to Federal Government arts funding, new Council funding support for Australia Day community events and an update on using social media for events promotions. Also on Wednesday, November 21, you can inspect the Mooball Wastewater Treatment Plant from 11am to 11.30am. Bookings are essential to (02) 6670 2460 or cjackson@tweed.nsw.gov.au
On Thursday, November 22, there will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the Tweed Laboratory Centre at Tweed Heads South (10am to 11am). The tour caters for a maximum of 20, so bookings are essential on (07) 5569 3103 or samplereception@tweed.nsw.gov.au
Then at 11am to 11.30am on Thursday, November 22, there will be inspections of the Banora Point Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade. Bookings are essential on (02) 6670 2460 or cjackson@tweed.nsw.gov.au
Come along and try out activities such as cards, art and board games at the FABS (Fun Activities Banora Seniors) Open Day at the Banora Point Community Centre on Friday, November 23 (9am to 4pm). Enquiries and bookings on (07) 5523 2030 or lporter@tweed.nsw.gov.au
If you’re looking for a stylish Christmas gift, make sure you head to the Artisan’s Handcrafted Market at the Tweed River Art Gallery in South Murwillumbah on Saturday, November 24 (10am to 4pm) to purchase one of the original works for sale by local artists. While you’re in Murwillumbah, don’t miss the annual Local Government Week Family Fun Day, which will be held in Knox Park on Saturday, November 24 and will feature the official opening of the Murwillumbah Community Centre by the Hon Justine Elliot MP, Thomas George MLA and Mayor of Tweed,  Councillor Barry Longland.
There will be performances by an Aboriginal dance group, music, displays by a variety of Council units, an opportunity to talk to Councillors, free children’s activities such as a rock climbing wall, jumping castles, tae-kwon-do, creative art workshops and a selection of Council’s heavy vehicles to view at close hand.
