Around and About

By JAYNE HENRY

NOTHING like an upcoming election to get everyone into the swing of Spring. The last few weeks of Winter are offering a host of lovely things to do and see on the Tweed, so enjoy as you head out and about this weekend.
Now there’s nothing nicer than attending an event that fund-raises for a great cause. Saltbar Beachbar and Bistro is hosting a fund-raising luncheon this Friday 16 August to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. For those who haven’t heard about the ‘boob sled’ that will be crossing the Antarctica, this is a great opportunity to learn more about this unique effort of one Aussie bloke helping to raise the $1 million for the foundation. For more information on this epic journey visit www.pinkpolar.com.au and see how you can contribute towards ‘getting abreast’ of this disease.
From boob sleds to bush skills, the Tyalgum Diggers Family Fun Day will offer a great family friendly day out this Saturday 17 August from 11am to 10pm. Held at the Tyalgum Showground, there promises to be a great entertainment program inclusive of an Australian Light Horse demonstration, bush skills demonstrations, sports and novelty events, market stalls, vintage cars, laser skirmish and so much more! The highlight of the day will be a fireworks display at sunset! For more information on this event phone 0478 218 735.

HEY – hey – hey – hazz up your life this weekend at the Broadbeach Jazz Festival. The event runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 August and boasts a fantastic line-up of musical talents. There will be a number of outdoor stages as well as artists performing in venues throughout Broadbeach. There are no tickets to purchase and no doors to cover, this festival is completely free and has a great array of Australia’s finest jazz artists including Ashley Lewis Quartet, Big Kitty, Kate Ceberano, Liam Burrows and Mark Watson – just to name a few. To see more about this event including the entertainment program, visit the website at www.broadbeachjazz.com or contact the Broadbeach Alliance on 07 5539 8416.

AND finally, if you don’t mind going for a drive to Brisvegas, the Brisbane EKKA continues this week with the finale on Saturday 17 August. There is just so much to see and do for all the family, with pavilion after pavilion hosting all sorts including animals, arts and craft, showbags and food. As well as learning fun and activities, there are professional shows such as the Magic and Illusion Show and the CommBank Natural Fibres Fashion Show. There will be rides galore for kids of all ages and the “Ekka Ignites 360 Grand Finale” on Saturday night! For more information on the entertainment program and tickets, including the new online purchasing system, head to the website at www.ekka.com.au
