Walk to work and win

Get on board and go car-free on Thursday, September 22 to celebrate World Car
Free Day.
Join people around the world by walking, riding a bike, skateboarding or taking the bus to work or study on this day, then tell Northern Rivers Social Development transport development workers Kate Geary and Linda Wirf your story about going
car-free.
How did you do it and what happened along the way? There will be a prize for the most interesting story as well as opportunities to share stories with the wider community.
This is the day to jump on a bus and enjoy a relaxing journey without the stress of dealing with traffic congestion and finding a parking spot, or take the opportunity to improve your health by walking or cycling.
“Many people in the Northern Rivers rely on car travel, yet the fuel we currently use produces about 2.5kg of greenhouse gas per litre,” Linda said.
“You can save money and save the environment by leaving the car at home. There is a worldwide movement to end the reliance on cars and remake town centres into beautiful environments for living, playing, working and shopping.
“You might enjoy it so much that you will want to do it every day,” Kate said. “Good luck with the challenge and let us know how you go! We’d love to get photos with your story as well.”
Email your Car Free Day stories to linda.wirf@nrsdc.org.au or kate.geary@nrsdc.org.au or post them to PO Box 5419, East Lismore NSW 2480.
You can also find out about transport options for the whole of the Northern Rivers, including bus timetables and walk/cycle paths at www.goingplaces.org.au or phone Kate or Linda on 6620 1800 for help with planning you car-free trip.
And don’t forget the GJ Gardiner’s crew doing their walk to work in South Tweed.
