POTTSVILLE Cricket Club have dominated day one of this year’s junior cricket with wins in both the under 12 and under 14s on Saturday.
The Pelicans won a thriller in the final over of the day in the Under-12 Tweed District Competition game against Murwillumbah.
Murwillumbah batted first and scored 3/129 in their 24 overs with Daniel Acret taking 2/3 for Pottsville while William Stone took the first wicket of his cricketing career.
Pottsville then went on a runs chase, needing 130 for victory they finally reached that total in the last over of the day. Mitchell Boyd scored 21 (retired) with Cooper Pollock (9) and Zac Ryan (5) also batting well.
In the under 14s, Tweed teams play in the Ballina District Competition and Pottsville were too strong for Tintenbar at East Ballina on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and bowled dismissing Tintenbar-East Ballina for 66 with Angus Bourne 2/3 and Jarryd Lohman 2/10 doing most of the damage.
In reply Pottsville passed the target of 66 with relative ease scoring 3/112. Bailey Engler 30-not-out and Beau Kelly 15 batted well to put Pottsville in a position to go on and win the match.
Meanwhile in other under-14 games Murwillumbah went down to Alstonville.
Murwillumbah won the toss and bowled with Alstonville finishing with 3/200. Rowan Donnelly took 1-15 in his first ever game of cricket for Murwillumbah.
In reply Murwillumbah could only muster 92 runs, with Rowan producing a not-out innings of 12. A great start to his cricket career.
Other strong batting performances from Declan Cronan who retired on 30 and Callum Opperman scoring a nice 21.
Mullumbimby-Brunswick this year have merged with Murwillumbah to field a team in the under-16 Ballina Competition. The newly named Mullum/Murbah team travelled to Cudgen to play the highly fancied Cudgen under-16 team. Cudgen won the toss and sent Mullum/Murbah in to bat. A good all round batting performance saw Mullum/Murbah score 9/148. The batting standout was Issac Fisher with a quick-fire 58.
Connor Ziebell with bowling figures of 2/6 off four overs and Max Byrant with 2/29 off four overs were the standouts for Cudgen. Cudgen got off to a great start with both openers retiring Kyle Lohman with 42 and Jarron Wilson with 29.
However Mullum/Murbah caused an upset restricting Cudgen to 129. Standout bowlers for Mullum/Murbah were Aaron Bird with 3/10 off three overs and Nathan Thompson bowling five overs with figures of 2/19 supported in the field with three catches by Jack Sims.
