Good relationships are about communication and to make communication easier, and be part of the conversation, you need to have good hearing.
During NSW Seniors
Week, Australian Hearing is reminding seniors about the importance of good hearing for maintaining healthy relationships and staying connected with family and friends.
A 2009 survey of Australian Hearing clients aged 65 and over found that good hearing is linked to better relationships, with one in 10 people saying that using a hearing aid improved their love life.
Mr John Eakin, Area Manager at Australian Hearing Tweed Heads, said the survey also found that hearing aids make it easier to have intimate conversations.
“Hearing loss can affect social and emotional wellbeing and cause stress on relationships,” Mr Eakin said. “The survey highlights the positive benefits of using a hearing aid for maintaining a social and romantic life, as well as remaining connected with family and friends.”
“For two in three people with hearing loss, hearing aids helped them overcome the difficulty in connection with family and friends,” he added. “For more than half of those surveyed, hearing aids helped improve their social life.”
Managing a hearing loss enables seniors to enjoy a healthier and happier life and Australian Hearing encourages anyone aged over 65 to have their hearing checked every two years. There are also a number of hearing solutions available, other than hearing aids, which have
been developed to help hearing impaired people hear better in their daily life.
“There are some excellent solutions available to help people regain the sounds that they have lost or find challenging to hear,”
Mr Eakin added. “They are perfect for people who don’t wear a hearing aid but want to hear certain sounds better, like the telephone or TV.”
