The Tweed Shire Council mayor will be elected at an extraordinary meeting at the Shire Chambers in Murwillumbah tonight (Thursday).
The election of the mayor is the final step as the new council settles in to place.
The Extraordinary Meeting will be held at 6pm at the Council Chambers at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre in Tumbulgum Road.
At this meeting, the councillors will elect the mayor for the next 12 months and determine dates and times of future council meetings.
The new-look council will then be up and running.
The poll for the council elections, conducted on September 8, was declared on Friday with seven councillors elected.
Counting of the votes resulted in the election of (in sequence of election):
1. Warren Polglase, 2. Katie Milne, 3. Michael Armstrong, 4. Barry Longland, 5. Gary Bagnall, 6. Carolyn Byrne, 7. Phil Youngblutt.
The new-look council includes three first timers, Labor’s Michael Armstrong, along with Gary Bagnall and Carolyn Byrne while Warren Polglase has been returned for the fourth time.
The poll was declared at 5.30pm at the Tweed Electoral Office at Tweed Heads by Returning Officer for the Tweed, Len Sparreboom.
Like the majority of NSW councils, Tweed Shire Council opted to have the Electoral Commission NSW conduct the election in their Local Government area.
