Kingscliff TAFE is offering a free Adult Migrant English Program to newly arrived migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants beginning in October.
Students can study English at beginner to intermediate level. They will learn speaking, listening, reading and writing skills – for everyday living, for work and for further study. They will also learn about Australian society, culture and customs.
Chris Evens, teacher of General Education, believes students who attend English classes gain confidence so that they can participate more fully in the community and become involved in their children’s schooling.
“This course will assist students to gain employment and to meet and make new friends. Many students go on to enrol in other courses at TAFE and university after they complete their English classes”, Chris said.
Tran Bo Ngoc Vo who lives in Chinderah with her aunty recently arrived in Australia from Vietnam and is undertaking a Certificate III in English at Kingscliff TAFE. Tran already has her future education planned out. On completing her Certificate III she plans on undertaking a Diploma of Hospitality at Kingscliff TAFE. From there Tran hopes to go on and study a Bachelor of Business in International Hospitality Management at Southern Cross University.
“Studying at TAFE is much more than learning English, I have met many people at TAFE and made a lot of good friends. The teachers have also helped us with not just English but understanding Australian customs and culture,” Tran said.
The course is funded by the Australian Government, through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. It provides a minimum of 510 hours of free lessons and child care for eligible participants.
Classes will be held full-time or part-time during the day, Monday to Thursdays 9am to 3pm at Kingscliff TAFE Campus English Language Centre F block.
