Bumper field for Kingy Tri

DECEMBER’s Kingy Tri promises to be the biggest one in the event’s four-year history with more than 1200 individuals and 150 teams entered.
Race director Mike Crawley said athletes, friends and families were travelling from across Australia to compete in the country’s newest iconic race for kids, juniors, sprinters, Olympians and teams.
“Accommodation houses are pressed to provide sufficient inventory and many participants are arriving on the Friday and staying until the Monday which further adds economic value to the community,” he said.
Crawley said he was excited with the size of the field and particularly the growth of the kids and juniors along with athletes attending the Kingy Tri for their first time. He said competitors at this year’s event could be considered for selection as part of the Australian team to the World Championships.
He said the weekend had a large volunteer workforce and was generating funds for the local Cudgen Headland surf lifesaving club, the Twin Towns triathlon club, the Murwillumbah swimming club, Rotary Tweed South, the Marine Protection Group, and the local schools.
Olympic distance racing starts around 8am Queensland time on Sunday 1 December in the beautiful Cudgen Creek for 1.5km, following by a gruelling 40km cycle race to Chinderah, then a 10km run towards Southerland Point.
“All the community is invited to come and enjoy one of Australia’s most highly sought after beach triathlons,” he said.
