THE Cudgen Classic will take on a whole new feel this year with open-age competitors competing for the first time ever.
The annual “Cudgen Classic” Iron Person and Board events has traditionally only be a junior competition. The event, always attracts large entries from clubs within the FNC Branch, Queensland and NSW should be even bigger this year with the open competitors swelling the ranks.
Cudgen members who can assist in water safety, carnival set-up, pull down or officiating should attend early or notify carnival referee Gary Cain.
Meanwhile this weekend will also be a big one for Cabarita, which will host the first branch open carnival of the year. The event will also serve as a selection carnival for the NSW inter-branch team to compete at North Entrance in December.
Nominations for officials at the Country and NSW age masters and open carnivals close on 8 November.
Last Sunday was a busy one for the Cudgen Club, which provided water safety for the Kingscliff Rotary Duck Race, stand up paddle and canoe races in Cudgen Creek. On the ocean, water safety was also provided for the Tweed Coast Outriggers who had 79 entries in the 21.5km open race and a 12.5km junior paddle, along with a busy morning of nipper activity.
Coming up Sunday 24 November, Cudgen will hold a fun barefoot bowls fundraiser at Kingscliff Bowls Club. The event is open to any member of Surfclubs, bowls clubs and public. During the afternoon there will be an official presentation of a new inshore rescue boat. (IRB) which has been co-funded by Kingscliff Bowls Club and Cudgen Old Boys Association. There will be several sports celebrities attending, entertainment, raffles. Teams of four are asked to challenge each other, individuals will be allocated teams. Registrations can be made at KBC and on the sheets displayed in the Cudgen Headland Surf Club.
Salt SLSC have been experiencing a lot of early season activity and interest in life saving at junior and senior level. They have 28 people registered to do their Bronze Medallion this season. The training is being conducted by education officer and club captain Gary Raso.
The training has forced the club to move the theory training sessions from their small clubhouse under the Saltbar deck to the Mantra Tennis Pavilion. Mantra and Peppers Resort are again major sponsors of the club. They have also welcomed local boutique butchery Jack Sprat’s as a sponsor supplying meats for the barbecues each weekend and also supplying meat trays for fund raising raffles at the Saltbar on Weekends.
Only two weeks ago Salt members attended their dry proficiency in the Mantra Tennis Pavilion location also followed by the Sunday water proficiency at Salt Beach with over 60 active members going through the annual practice of becoming proficient for the next season.
Congratulations to the Salt team that competed in Coolangatta Gold last Sunday. Jeff Smith , Aaron Curtis and J.P. Smith proudly represented the club and are already talking of an increased training routine of next years Cooly Gold.
And in other big news for Salt SLSC the DA for the new clubhouse has been granted TSC consent and is now awaiting the outcome of a State Government infrastructure grant to realise the dream of building a real surf club.
