Tweed Cricket By Hank Thompson
THE conclusion of round one and unfortunately all Tweed sides in the L.J. Hooker League went down to their southern counterparts.
Pottsville v Lennox
Resuming at 3/40 and chasing a modest 178, The Potty Pelicans were never really in the chase, loosing wickets at regular intervals and finishing at 9/117. Owen van Megchelen top scored with 32, and was supported by Josh Hoare with 21, however most other batters failed to score over 10. With one player short due to a midweek injury, the task was made even harder. Speaking with a disappointed Jayden Hoare, Pottsville “were kept under constant pressure, and a few soft dismissals did not help”.
Cudgen v Marist
After losing on the first innings already, Cudgen arrived with nothing to lose and an outright to gain. Finishing off Marist took a little longer then was hoped for, Marist batting for over an hour taking their score to 120 all out. Cudgen then smashed their way to 4/220 in just 25 overs, Craig Wilson topscoring with 86, well supported by Jamie Wilson 54 and Alany Bill Williams 31 not out. Cudgen then required 10 wickets in two hours, and after having Lismore 6/43 it looked like a miracle could occur. However, that was the last wicket they took, Michael Anderson the best for the Hornets with 4/22. Wicketkeeper Calleb Gall stated “we had our chances at the end, but unfortunately could not capitilise”.
Terranora v Ballina
Last week saw Ballina just 34 runs and nine wickets from a first innings lead, and a major miracle was required at the ditch called Bilambil if the Lakes boys wanted to stay in this one. A miracle though was a distance away, Ballina cruising to 291 for the loss of just five wickets. Best for the Lakes was David Parkes with 3/32. Terranora was then sent back in, and stood strong, scoring 3/105 with wicketkeeper Pete Suttcliffe scoring 54, well supported by Eric Spratt with 21 not out. A tough first up encounter, but plenty to learn from for this top Terranora side.
Murwillumbah v Tintenbar
Murwillumbah began the day in with a big chance in what could have been one of the biggest upsets in the history of L.J. Hooker. Tintenbar, resuming at 2/73 had most of the luck though, and finished at 4/268. Tweed president and Murbah captain Ian Rowlings said “things could have been different had we took our chances” and that overall he was “very happy, and generally impressed” with most of his team’s attitude. Murbah then batted, and at 5/29 things were looking dreary, but some excellent performances from Riley Williamse (41 not out), Phil Jones (34 not out) and all-rounder newcomer Adam Meads (23) ensured an outright was a long way away.

Tweeds Lower Grades
There are only three grades in the local competition this year, the fourth grade getting culled due to behavioural reasons, and lack of numbers. However, this means the third grade will be a lot stronger. This week’s third grade amazing effort goes to Steffan Julius, a third grade stalwart with years of experience, scored an excellent 137 playing for Cudgen.
In second grade, Jesse Harrington from the Cudgen club as well scored an unbelievable 200 not out. Resuming at 50 not out, Harrington blasted his way to his double ton before tea (two hours). Congratulations to all sides and players this week, and fingers crossed the Tweed Teams can notch up their first win in the L.J. Hooker this game.
