THE Tweed now has an information centre just for seniors, with the opening on Friday of the Tweed Shire Seniors Information Hub at the Banora Community Centre.
The centre, officially opened by Tweed Mayor Barry Longland and Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot, gives Tweed seniors a place to find out about services, community groups, social, educational and leisure activities which are available in the local area and further afield.
“I’m honoured to officially open this wonderful space, which is already proving very popular with local seniors,” Councillor Longland said.
The hub, located at the Banora Point Community Centre, is funded by the Commonwealth Government, Home and Community Care Program (HACC) and run through Tweed Shire Council’s Community and Cultural Services unit.
“As a Commonwealth HACC-funded project, the Tweed Shire Seniors Information Hub is in place to support HACC-funded services and clients as well as seniors more broadly,” he said.
“Many people who live in this area have moved here from somewhere else and may be missing family and friends, as well as knowledge about services available in the Tweed and the region.
“This facility brings people together and connects them with each other as well as services and activities in the community which can enhance and improve their lives.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and volunteers at the Tweed Shire Seniors Information Hub, and to congratulate them for the positive effect they’re having on our community,” he said.
The Tweed Shire Seniors Information Hub is open on Tuesdays from 12.30pm to 4pm and on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4pm (all times are daylight saving time).
There are many other activities available to seniors at the Banora Point Community Centre. The Broadband for Seniors program offers free use of computers to access information on the internet, with training available for new internet users. Regular workshops are also held on using mobile phones.
The FABS program (Fun Activities for Banora Point Seniors) runs on Tuesday afternoon and all day Friday, with groups including card playing, exercise, scrapbooking, Tai Chi, art, as well as regular day trips to places of interest. A walking group and Heartmoves class also operate from the centre.
