TWEED Valley Mountain Bike Riders has won an inaugural club challenge for northern NSW, despite being the newest and smallest club represented.
The Tweed club finished well clear on the final point score, after 12 hours of racing near Coffs Harbour last Saturday and Sunday.
Solid performances by all the Tweed teams at the 6 X 6 Ride For Glory event netted a total of 192 points for the event, which comprised six hours of racing on Saturday afternoon and another six the following morning.
The Coffs-based club Refusenix placed second on 126. However, the host club’s elite riders led the way in a separate challenge for the best three or four-member teams.
The Refusenix quartet consistently set many of the quickest lap times for the two days, to hold out its closest rivals from Grafton, with the Tweed trio of Redmond Webster, Michael Brooks and Graham Spencer in third.
Webster showed his cross country prowess to record the Tweed club’s quickest lap times for the weekend, often rivalling the times of the riders in the leading two teams.
The results of the Tweed club’s pairs teams elevated it to the top of the Club Challenge point score. The Bikeforce duos of Karl Dehaen/Hayley Scott and Maggie Synge/Scott Green finished first and second in the mixed pairs’ category on both days, taking turns on the top podium position after a great duel.
Fellow club members Emma Webster and Sarah Rippon headed the female pairs’ division.
Tweed Riders will head south again on November 9 for the G-Bomb event at Bom Bom State Forest, near Grafton.
But before then, the Tweed club will stage round two of its club cross country series this Sunday from 9am.
