Combining NAIDOC celebrations Centaur primary held a farewell tribute on Thursday, July 19 to one of their favourite scripture teacher’s Aunty Kath Lena.
Mrs Lena has been an integral part of the school and its community since the opening in 1994 and has decided to retire.
She s a favourite amongst the students and said it would be difficult saying goodbye to her ‘babies’.
“I think it is important to be able to nurture the children through their young years and for the elders to take their positions and look after them.” said Mrs Lena of her valued role in the school.
This year’s theme, Spirit of the tent Embassy: 40 years on, celebrates the champions who lived to renew the spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
As Australia acknowledges its forbearers Centaur acknowledged their own Aboriginal community members who have dedicated their time to educate students in Indigenous history, celebrated achievements and shared skills with the students.
Students reverently raised the Indigenous flag, sadly farewelled their beloved ‘nan’ then enjoyed painting boomerangs.
Ms Latoya Williams visited various classrooms to assist with dot painting.
Mrs Lena reminisced over morning tea with teachers and parents. She has recently self-published her first book,
‘My Life’ which took four years to write, and is currently writing her second with the goal to pass down her history with the community.
Aunty Kath will be missed by all at Centaur.
