KINGSCLIFF swimming club member Bindi Ware has got the 2013/14 start off to a flying start with a swag of PBs and medals at the NSW Country and NSW State Age Short Course in July and August.
The young swimmer, who has just turned 11, has only started swimming in competition events in the past year.
The youngster almost didn’t make it to the Country Championships Short Course in Sydney in July after suffering “food poisoning” the night before with almost hourly vomiting, according mum Sandi Walker.
“She missed three events that first day, but rallied herself with ‘bucket’ in hand to try for her three last events the next day,” she said.
“With a weight loss of about two kilos and no food for two days (even water wasn’t kept down) she swam her first race, a 50m backstroke. Her time was less than half a second off her PB, but she was more worried about throwing up in the pool than anything else!
“After a lie down in the car at lunchtime, she once again took to the blocks for her 100m freestyle. She started strong in the first 50m, leading a very determined field of talented girls. Then she started to feel the weakness in her body from the last couple of days. With the last 25m to swim and the girls closing fast she hung on to touch the wall first in a PB of almost one and a half seconds off her seed time. Her first gold at these meets. She followed that up with her last event, the 50m fly and swam just under a second off her PB. She had a well deserved break of three days before commencing training once more for the NSW State Age SC.”
Registrations are now open for Kingscliff Swim Club. Swim Club registrations will also be held at Kingscliff Pool on the 8 October. There will be some fun races happening on the night. Official Swim Club commences on 15 October.
