BROOK Boyd’s own personal journey with breast cancer has inspired her to raise money to fight the disease for other women.
The Bilambil Heights mother of three is taking part in a two-day, 60-kilometre walk as part of the inaugural Weekend to End Women’s Cancers fund-raiser being held in Brisbane on 26-27 October.
It is a weekend to remember those whose lives have been lost to breast or gynaecological cancers and to celebrate those lives which have been saved.
Brook and her team will be raising money for the cause by holding a Trash and Treasure stall at this Sunday’s (29 September) PCYC market day in Florence Street, Tweed Heads from 7am.
All money raised from the sale of pre-loved stall goods, including adult and children’s clothes, linen, kitchenware, books, toys, small furniture items and knick-knacks, will benefit the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
“I am now in remission but feel strongly about raising money to support other women, and their families, going through what I have been through,” Brook said.
Daughter Kristy Waters, and friends Julie Pollock, Bree Pollock and Lanna Franks are joining her on the walk.
“These are the people who were my greatest supporters when I had cancer so it is really nice to have them join in this challenge with me too,” said Brook.
“The money we raise will help fund cancer research, improve detection, provide equipment and help discover new treatments. It is a really great cause.”
Brook is urging people to come along to the PCYC Market day on Sunday and see what treasures can be discovered among someone else’s trash. She is also still taking any last minute donations of small goods to sell at the stall or any prizes suitable for her next fund-raiser, a raffle.
“I want to give a huge thankyou to the people who have already donated to the raffle, including Summergrove Estate restaurant at Carool, Mangrove restaurant at Seagulls, Tweed Fitness Centre and Wayne Scifleet Motors for sharing in the fight against women’s cancers.”
