IN a packed Tweed Shire Council meeting on Thursday night, Tweed Shire Council deputy mayor Michael Armstrong moved to refuse an application to turn part of St Anthony’s Primary School playground into a car park for the adjacent shopping centre.
“While it may be necessary for the shopping centre to expand their car park, it should
not be done by ripping away a kids playground,” he said.
“We must always remember that the needs of our children come first.
“As a community, we know that by giving our kids the resources and facilities they
need to grow, develop, and learn, we are also ensuring the future of our community.
“While the State Government keeps ignoring the needs of our local kids, it is imperative that the Tweed Shire Council does all it can to protect the schools and the services our kids need, be that by ensuring that a school site remains available at Pottsville or by keeping playing fields for the students at St Anthony’s.
“As a community and as parents we cannot allow the needs of our children to come
second,” Cr Armstrong said.
The motion to reject the application was passed by the council.
