THEY may be from NSW but three former Cudgen Juniors played leading roles in this year’s North and South under-19 cricket clash at Ian Healy Oval, Brisbane at the weekend.
The annual event involved the best players from throughout Queensland who are not playing in the Brisbane-based QCA competition.
The Kingscliff-based trio who played all their junior cricket together at Cudgen, are Matt Keyte (captain of the Southern team), Caleb Ziebell and Jesse Harrington.
The trio were selected in South after helping the SEQ team to victory earlier in the year.
Jesse and Caleb are currently playing first grade with Cudgen in the Far North NSW competition while Matt Keyte plays first grade for Broadbeach/Robina in the Gold Coast competition.
The North-South clash happens annually with the two teams playing for the “Platypus Shield” and selection in the Queensland Country team.
The match is played over a two-day format with each side entitled to face 96 overs in the day’s play.
South Queensland captain Matt Keyte won the toss and sent North in.
North finished all out for 255 off 94.5 overs with Caleb Ziebell taking 1/36 off 14.5 overs and Matt Keyte finishing with 1/12 off seven overs.
Keyte opened the batting and was out caught behind down the leg side for six runs. Jesse Harrington batted at five and was caught at second slip for 19 runs and Caleb Ziebell was bowled for 13 runs.
In the end South fell 63 runs short of the North total and were all out for 192 in the 61st over.
