You can usually see them in their training gear around the bike tracks of the Coast, but on Saturday night the Casuarina Beach Bums swapped bike shorts for glad-rags – all for a good cause.
For the second year in a row, the “Beach Bums” are taking part in the annual Ride to Conquer Cancer ride in August – but to ride, they need to raise $2500 for the cause.
So, on Saturday night at Peppers, they held a major fundraiser – a “Casino Royale Night”.
“As a team, we are aiming to raise $15,000,” group spokesperson Tarnya Sim said.
“The Casino Royale Night was our big event to help achieve this.
“We are a team who have committed to The Ride to Conquer Cancer in August, 2012, riding 200km throughout Queensland’s scenic countryside in two days. Sure, it sounds like a lot — and it’s meant to be. But make no mistake, this event isn’t just for athletes or cycling enthusiasts.
“The Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer is for anyone who wants to challenge themselves for a great cause. All you need is motivation, a bike and a helmet. Our epic ride will move us closer to a cancer-free tomorrow.
“Together, with your help, we’re hoping to make a difference! We want to see cancer conquered in our lifetime. We are doing it for the ones we have lost, and the ones whose lives have been, and are, affected right now by cancer.
“Please contribute to this history-making event with a donation. Funds raised in The Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, a worldwide leader in cancer research and discovery; and one of the largest research institutes in the southern hemisphere.”
This year’s team is: Gillian & Troy Middlebrook, Kate Stoten and Warren & Tarnya Sim. Tarnya said more fundraisers are planned before the big ride – watch this space for details.
