Tweed Labor this week committed to helping local small businesses right across the Tweed.
Tweed Labor Candidate Reece Byrnes has criticised the Tweed Shire Council for failing to do more to support local small business.
“Council has an important role in fostering small businesses,” he said.
“Right across the Tweed we see empty shops and deserted Businesses Districts. This is bad for business, bad for workers, and bad for locals.”
The Tweed Labor team has announced that if elected they will move Council to take a more proactive role in assisting local small businesses by:
1. Working with local communities and business chambers to evaluate local business precincts and to find real solutions for local community issues;
2. Reducing the complexity of starting up businesses in the Tweed by making the Development Application process transparent and setting clear time guidelines within which Applications should be assessed;
3. Present the Tweed as a place to do business by facilitating a new business expo where the area opens its doors to visitors and locals alike to promote local business opportunities and to enable existing businesses to promote their services; and
4. Facilitate the creation of a one stop resource to provide information about business and employment assistance opportunities that are available locally.
“The Tweed Shire Council has an obligation to foster economic growth.
“The Council cannot by itself find all the answers but by working together with the local community, and by promoting local business opportunities and providing appropriate resources, Council can help kick start the Tweed Economy,” said fellow candidate Michael Armstrong.
