Coming up to Kingscliff for surf titles gave actor Ben Oxenbould plenty of great memories of the town and now, 15 years later, he’s finally making it back – on film at least.
Ben’s new movie, Caught Inside, opens at Cinemax, Arthouse Cinema, Kingscliff this week and, with the waves crashing on Dreamtime beach just across the road, it seems the perfect place to screen the movie.
CAUGHT INSIDE is a psychological thriller where a tight-knit group of surfers venture to a secluded island paradise on the ‘surfari’ of their lives, making the mistake of bringing the one thing that can tear them apart: A beautiful young woman.
As tensions boil over and friendships fall to the side, a monster emerges from within the most revered and feared amongst them. A monster who turns the dream vacation into a nightmare fight for survival.
The film stars Ben, in what is being described as a “career defining performance”, Daisy Betts, Sam Lyndon, Simon Lyndon, Harry Cook, Leeanna Walsman and Peter Phelps.
For surf-mad Ben and the rest of the cast and crew, the shoot meant a month on a boat in the beautiful Maldives – making landfall just twice in that whole period of time.
“Everyone says it must have been fantastic,” he laughed.
“But we worked really, really hard – we were working and we would see the perfect wave going unsurfed.
“It was almost torture.”
But being on a boat in the Maldives did have its advantages (and yes he did get to surf from time to time). With such a taxing psychological performance – Ben found the perfect way to relax late at night watching the different night marine life coming in.
“There was everything from tiny pilchards to turtles, dolphins and sharks,” he said.
