As part of History Week, Curator of the Museum of Printing Dr Benjamin Thorn will present an illustrated talk on women’s clothing advertising in Armidale in the 1950s, at the Museum of Printing (underneath NERAM) at 6pm on Thursda,y September 13.
The talk will focus on both the types of garments that were advertised and the technological process involved in producing print advertisements.
“Clothes from the USA, Britain and South Africa, as well as Australia were advertised and presumably found a market in Armidale,” said Dr Thorn.
“The styles and advertising approaches provide a fascinating insight into our region’s social history.”
Equally fascinating, he says, is the technology and sometimes horrific occupational health and safety, involved in producing print advertisements.
The talk will draw on material from the Museum of Printing collection, the UNE and Regional Archives and from the oral history project Dr Thorn has been conducting for the last six years.
All welcome. Admission to the talk is by gold coin donation.
