Flamenco guitar workshops for the Gold Coast

Coolum-based guitarist Andrew Veivers, a frequent visitor to the Tweed, has been commissioned by the Sydney Theatre Company to compose, arrange and perform in their 2011 production of Federico Garcia Lorca’s Blood Wedding. The six-week season of performances starts this August, at the Wharf Theatre (Sydney) and is  already close to selling out.
Dramatising the brutal struggle between a socially sanctioned relationship and an all-engulfing erotic desire, Blood Wedding exposes the power that society has to stifle individuality. It is a play of exquisite beauty, possessing the surreal, poetic qualities and emotional fervour that characterise Lorca’s writing.
One of Australia’s finest guitarist/composers, Andrew Veivers will draw on a wide range of musical influences for his work in Blood Wedding.Renowned for his solo and ensemble compositions and performances, Andrew has appeared  at venues ranging from Blenhiem Palace (UK) to The Dillington Classical Guitar Festival (UK) to chamber music series in Amsterdam, to concerts at many of Australia’s leading performance venues and festivals. His compositional and performance explorations have included work with Flamenco Fire, SOULO, The Saruzu Quartet, MZAZA and the Doch Gypsy Orchestra.
Andrew has recently launched his new instructional manual and DVD – The Rhythm Method: An Introduction to the Rhythms and Techniques of the Flamenco Guitar and will be staging flamenco guitar workshops in Coolum on Saturday, May 21 and the Gold Coast on Sunday, May 22  prior to relocating to Sydney for Blood Wedding rehearsals and performances. The workshops are open to guitarists of all skill levels – a general knowledge of basic guitar chords and vocabulary is required.
