As national public and media support for the Australian military presence in Afghanistan wanes, the Armidale and District Sub-branch of the National Servicemen’s Association is focusing on the men
and women who are over there, in service to their country.
Over the next few weeks, the Nasho’s will be making up care parcels to be sent to Australian troops in Afghanistan.
“We will be calling for donations because we don’t have the money to do it all ourselves,” President of the Armidale and District Sub-branch of the National Servicemen’s Association, Harold Heffernan said.
“We will be posting a list of the kind of things that we can send, in local media and shops.”
The Tamworth Nasho’s conducted a successful appeal last year and their Armidale and District counterparts have been able to refer to their list of appropriate donations, which includes toiletries, confectionery and treats for sniffer dogs and their handlers.
“We feel that anything they get from home will be a boost for their spirits,” Mr Heffernan said.
Donations of money and goods can be left at the Armidale Ex-Services Club.
Suggestions for care package contents include confectionery (other than chocolate), non-aerosol toiletries, vegemite (in a tube, not a glass jar), stationery, playing cards and puzzles, etc. Discouraged items include alcohol, tobacco, cakes of soap and fresh meat/produce, etc.
