And they are not afraid to show it, on Saturday September 29 during the free Caba Creative Carnivale. This family fun twilight event runs from 3pm till 8pm. Sounds of local musicians will accompany a host of art and craft exhibitions and activities from the foreshore stage.
Duke Albada from Caba Creative enthusiastically lists the different acts enticed to join the stage. “We managed to organise a program that offers a fantastic mix of entertainment, from poets to alt-country guitarists, to cover bands, to a gang ‘spawned from the belly of the Caldera’.”
The stage will open with exotic Turkish sounds produced by Shahmaran. Mother and son, Mairi and Mick Manly, are teaming up while another family member Will Manly plays later in the evening. Ephemeron are three practised musicians who formed a band especially for the Carnivale. Belen will get the crowd dancing with a free Zumba – Far North Coast style class.
Switching moods, the audience can hear Thomas Keily, a Sufi inspired ecstatic poet who will be performing with Daniel Alexander from Mullum.
Appearing will be Alan Kirk, originally from Glasgow, now a local Pottsville guitarist and singer songwriter. He’ll be delivering a set, mixing his original heartfelt post-indie blend of nu-folk and alt-country with some more unusual covers by artists such as Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan. In his dark past Alan has gigged with artists such as multi-million album selling KT Tunstall and gone busking with members of indie super group Belle and Sebastian.
Later the Two Pot Screamers will perform their original song “Headland”, which was written about the magnificent landmark, Norries Headland. A Murwillumbah duo, Sally and Brett, who go by the name the Magnetic Drill Bits – an alt-rock, country blues-groove, garage band – will perform their tales of adventure and mis-adventure. Their razor-sharp sounds are inspired by broken hearts, broken minds and the restorative power of music. Electric guitar twanging and bass guitar thrumming are accompanied by vitriolic vocals.
The community event is coming to a close when you hear the hits you know and love to sing along with by Ange Wojcicki. The headline of the day is local songbird Devon Plumby. She will feature her virtuoso keyboard skills and amazing singing voice by playing her quirky renditions of classic hits like Thriller.
Several other hap-penings that are bound to entertain all will be presented from the stage by Tom Benditz, a highly experienced and versatile showbiz guru who will MC the event. Tom is well known in the area for his work on Bay FM Byron and has appeared on TV in dramas like Neighbours. He will present the Wing Art created by the Bogangar Public School kids at 5pm. The Ultimate Caba Experience Raffle will be drawn at 6.30 and if you have a dog with a wicked dress sense, come and compete for the K9 Fashion prize, the winner to be announced at 5.30pm.
