Michael Snape, one of Australia’s most prominent and distinctive sculptors, will be holding a sculpture workshop at the New England Regional Art Museum on Sunday, November 27, 10am to 4pm. Two of Snape’s sculptures are displayed in the front courtyard at NERAM.
Snape is a regular exhibitor in Sculpture by the Sea, has completed major commissions throughout Australia and has work in a number of public and private collections. His work encompasses a broad range of materials and styles including huge angular steel sculptures, delicately linked figurative works and more organic pieces using recycled wood.
Many of his public sculptures open up and become a part of the environment, not just by being placed in the landscape, but also because of the way the landscape can be seen through the sculptures.
For Snape, the development of his screen sculptures has been a response to the intense Australian light, especially in urban areas. “In these light conditions,” he says, “the building often needs another membrane to break down the light.” His modern interpretation of the traditional frieze allows the pieces to be both functional and decorative.
This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a highly experienced and versatile artist to create a large community sculpture in the grounds of NERAM.
