Odd socks raise cash

THE annual Donate4Kate Odd Socks fund-raiser week is back during 3-10 May, hoping to raise more money than last year in memory of local girl Kate Philp, who passed away in March 2010 after a three-year battle with melanoma.
The Armidale Sports Council is calling on all sporting associations to get behind the event.
All you need to do is encourage participants to wear odd socks to a sporting fixture that falls in the odd sock week and get association members or rep players to walk around and collect the donations.
Everyone can get involved, no matter if you are a player, spectator or official; all you have to do is wear your odd socks to any sporting fixtures and make a gold coin donation.
All proceeds will go to Melanoma Institute Australia on behalf of the Kate Philp Melanoma Research Fund.
Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world. It is the most common and deadliest cancer in persons aged 15-39. In Armidale, we are at risk because of the higher altitude, which means we are closer to the sun.
Kate’s melanoma started on her big toe and, despite apparently successful surgery, spread to her lymphatic system. Jo Dolan, Kate’s mother, and Jen Marsh, Kate’s sister, will continue to get the melanoma message out to as many people as possible.
Armidale Sports Council would also like to encourage schools and local businesses to get behind this great cause and hold an odd sock day at work or school during this week.
“It’s as simple as holding a mufti day and collecting a donation,” said sports council president Steve McMillan.
All donations can be deposited as follows:
Bank Account Transfer: Bank: St George Bank BSB: 112 879, Account Name: Donate 4 Kate Australia, Account Number: 484668196 .
Cheques can be mailed to: PO Box 177, Uralla NSW 2358, Australia (Payable to Donate4Kate).
All donations go to the Melanoma Institute Australia on behalf of the Kate Philp Melanoma Research Fund to assist with research and raising awareness.
