PROGRESSIVE unionists are organising a May Day celebration on Wednesday, 1 May, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Armidale Club, 91 Beardy Street.
“All unionists and members of the community are invited to join our celebration of international solidarity and our commitment to the struggle for a just and sustainable society,” Bea Bleile, one of the organisers, said.
“Proceedings will commence at 5.30pm with live music by Fabio Tolli. Then we’ll hear from Tony Ramsay, who has been active in the union movement for many years and is the president of the Armidale branch of the ALP. Tony will describe his personal journey from industrial democracy on Sydney building sites to Thatcher’s Britain in the ’80s.”
The next contribution will be dedicated to the memory of Hugo Chavez Frias who showed that, contrary to Thatcher’s mantra, there is an alternative. Margaret Gleeson, an Australian Services Union delegate of the year and member of the Socialist Alliance, joined the Australia-Venezuela solidarity brigade in 2012.
Margaret will talk about gains of the revolution for the ordinary person in Venezuela, the current situation after the presidential elections and prospects for the future.
Before opening up for discussion there will be an update from the 24-hour strike held by the UNE branch of the National Tertiary Education Union on 1 May.For further information call Bea Bleile on 0458 752 680.
