Each year close to 3,300 men die of prostate cancer and for Tweed Coaster Chris Carter a brush with the “Big C” was enough to inspire him – not bury his head in the sand as some men do with health problems – but to do something.
Chris, along with Cheryl Cain from the Cudgen Headland Surf Club, have got together to raise money for Prostate Cancer Research Australia and the Surf Club. More importantly they are hoping to raise awareness about the disease.
They are organising a “Paddle for Prostate Cancer”- Cook Island Challenge on September 8. All competitors must be over 18 and the event includes Open Classes and over-40s male and female and will include three outrigger races (OC1, OC2 and OC6) 14km from Kingscliff to Cook Island and back. A Surf Club Ski and Ocean Paddle Ski both to Cook Island and back, Surf Club paddle board which is 8km from Kingscliff halfway to Cook and back and a 6km battle of the paddle stand up paddle race.
Entry fee is $65 and you can register your interest by filling in the registration form on the facebook page www.facebook.com/cookislandchallenge. Chris and Cheryl are also keen to hear from sponsors willing to become involved in the event.
“It will be a fun day out for all the family,” Cheryl said.
“There will be a barefoot bar, bbq and music on the lawn.”
Sponsors are needed as well as donations of goods and services to raffle on the day.
Chris said as well as a fundraiser, the Cook Island Challenge was also aimed at raising awareness.
“Each year in Australia close to 3,300 men die of prostate cancer – equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually,” he said.
“Around 20,000 new cases are diagnosed in Australia every year.
“If you are keen to improve or show off your paddle prowess while supporting this worthwhile cause then save the date – September 8.”
