Pottsville Starlettes head to Chicago

Celebrating 15 years of the incredible Chicago musical, the dance group Pottsville Starlettes is presenting an exciting night on December 10 at 7pm at Pottsville Primary School Hall.
The movie will be played on the big screen and the girls will dance the musical numbers on the stage..
The group started two-and-a-half years ago with dance classes, headed by the Brazillian actress and dancer Ale Salisbury, every Wednesday night at the school hall.
With twenty years’ experience in modern ballet and jazz experience and several musical theatre plays in Brazil, Ale decided to focus her dance classes in creating original dances based on musical movies that were a worldwide success.
“The idea was instantly adored by the girls in class (most from Pottsville and some from the Tweed area),” Ale said.
“The group produced Burlesque Concert in July this year and are promoting Chicago concert for December. On next year’s shows list are Moulin Rouge and Mama Mia. Go girls!!!”
She said the current focus was the Chicago concert, with the girls putting in a lot of work to prepare for their big night.
Ale said CHICAGO celebrates its 15 years live on the Broadway stage this year.
“The famous musical has every-thing that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping-song after another; and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen,” she said.
“No wonder CHICAGO has been honoured with six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations. It’s also no surprise that CHICAGO has wowed audiences all around the world, from Mexico to Russia, from Brazil to South Africa.
“The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the ‘celebrity criminal’.”
The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about Chicago, actual criminals and crimes she reported on.
The stage version tells the story of murderesses Velma Kelly (a cabaret dancer and tease woman who killed her husband and sister after finding them in bed together) and Roxie Hart (a dreamy woman who killed her boyfriend when she discovered he wasn’t going to make her a star) who find themselves on death row together and fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows in 1920s Chicago.
Pottsville Starlettes Dance Group is open now for new members to start in January 2012.
