Expert Kodaly teachers to visit Armidale

Back: Bruce Myers and Inge Southcott (Secretary Armidale Chapter of Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia); Front: Constance Rolfe, Rowena Tall and Amy Walsh (Armidale Chapter of Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia).

The New England Conservatorium of Music and the Armidale Chapter of Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia (NSW branch) will be holding another hands-on workshop at the Old Teachers’ College on the weekend of October 19-20.
It will provide an opportunity for teachers and musicians of all ages to enhance their musical skills in a supportive environment.  Armidale has a burgeoning interest in Kodaly’s methods which are now being used in the music departments at several prominent schools. All the choirs at the New England Conservatorium of Music are currently led by Kodaly trained teachers (Leanne Roobol, Amy Walsh and Rowena Tall).
Amy Walsh, the president of the Armidale Chapter, is excited that they have been able to secure the services of a leading Australian expert in the field, Brisbane-based Judith Johnson, who is the author of several texts used by primary school music educators. She has been teaching this method in schools for nearly 30 years and has only recently retired from the School of Music at the University of Queensland where she also taught aural musicianship and classroom methodology to teachers in training.
“Her vast experience and delightful personality will make this a very special learning experience for all of us,” said Amy.
Teachers attending the weekend will receive 10 hours of accredited PD from the NSW Institute of Teachers and Judith will take a special stream concentrating on early childhood methodology – a wonderful introduction for those new to Kodaly methods. She is also holding a session on Friday, October  19 from 2pm to 4.30pm specifically for teachers of 1-8 year olds (cost $45) called Music Matters. The other presenter at this weekend is Tim Sherlock, a renowned choral conductor, composer and high school teacher from Brisbane where he is Head of Music at All Hallows School.  His choral compositions are in great demand by childrens’, youth and adult choirs. He will give a special workshop on composition for high school music students on Friday, October 19 (cost $10)in morning and afternoon sessions. These are open to anyone interested in finding out more about the art of composition from an inspiring teacher.
These weekend workshops welcome newcomers to Kodaly methods who find them both fun and inspiring. No previous experience is necessary.  It is a hands- on learning experience primarily based on group singing and rhythmic games.  Kodaly’s aim was to make music accessible to everyone, whether talented or not and anyone interested in improving their musical skills is welcome to attend – all one needs to bring is one’s voice and a willingness to join in. There are sessions on musicianship, teaching methodology (primary), choral conducting and choral singing.
Enquiries and early bird bookings before September 30 ($110 for adults and $55 for students) can be directed to email: kodalyarmidale@gmail.com or the secretary, Inge Southcott on 0431 479 008.
