Murwillumbah Theatre Company is proud to announce that their next production will be Norman Lindsay’s fanciful story, The Magic Pudding, adapted for the stage by Andrew James with music by Sarah de Jong.
Opening on Saturday, Oct 20 at 5.30 pm in the Murwillumbah Civic Centre Auditorium, this comical classic of children’s literature will provide entertainment for three to ninety-three year olds.
The story of The Magic Pudding has been a source of wonder and amusement for nearly 90 years and no matter how much the reader or viewer gets out of the story, there is, as with the Pudding itself, always something left.
The story arose out a professional disagreement Lindsay had with fellow writer, Bertram Stevens, who thought that fairies were the most popular subject for a children’s story. Lindsay believed it was food. The pudding won!
Bunyip Bluegum (played by Lea Coleman) a koala runs away from home because he can’t stand his Uncle’s whiskers, and meets Bill Barnacle the sailor (Peter Hulme) and Sam Sawn-Off, the penguin (Toni Reilly).
They own a magic pudding, Albert (a puppet manipulated by David Thomas) who is an irritable fellow, always insulting them, and is contemptuous of how little they eat of it. But there are a couple of dangerous puddin’ thieves about –Watkin Wombat (Sage Coleman) and Possum (Madeleine Edwards)with a flair for disguise, and despite the trio’s watchfulness, the puddin’ is always being stolen. The ongoing battle to gain ownership winds up in the courtroom (with John Mullins as the Judge and Charles Hurley as the Constable) where chaos and confusion reign supreme.
Complete with heroes, villains, songs and audience interaction, the play is sure to be a winner with both adults and children alike. The production continues on Saturday 20 & 27 October at 5.30pm, Sunday 21 & 28 October at 2pm, Sat 3 Nov at 7.30pm finishing on Sunday 4 November at 2pm. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children and are available from Murwillumbah Music Shop (02 6672 5404), at Tweed Tourism in Tweed Heads or Murwillumbah and online at www.murwillumbahtheatrecompany.com.
