History Week 2011 will be celebrated in Armidale and brings to the table the edible, appetising, tasty history of food. Who ate what and where? How did we cook and where did our food come from? History Week 2011 will be a smorgasbord of delectable delights.
EAT History is the theme of History Week 2011’s exhibitions, talks and dining experiences. Join chefs, gastronomers and food historians to discover the morsels of our past.
Let’s Eat! Food through the Centuries
Presented by University of New England
The Museum of Antiquities houses artefacts from the ancient Mediterranean and the Near East; from Africa, Meso-America and South East Asia; from Australia, New Guinea and Oceania. What better place to explore the wealth and diversity of food and eating through thousands of years! Displays will feature recipes and food customs, ancient and modern. A ‘Food Trail’ meandering through the cases will guide the discovery of all manner of eating vessels and storage containers – plain, fancy and unique.
When: Friday, September 2 until Friday, September 16, 9:30am to 4pm. Museum open Monday to Friday.

Dining in Armidale

An exhibition related to dining in Armidale featuring historical menus and mealtime memorabilia.

Taking the Biscuit
Presented by Museum of Printing at the New England Regional Art Museum
An exhibition of printing blocks from the 1950s and 60s advertising biscuits, with some of the original newspapers they appeared in. A fascinating look at what biscuits were available half a century ago and which manufacturers and products survive to today. Exhibition opening and biscuit tasting (of some of the biscuits that are still manufactured) Sunday, September 4.
The exhibition will run until January 2012.
When: Sunday, September 4, 10:30am to 3:30pm. The Museum of Printing is open Thursdays and Fridays weekly.
