The other Armidale newspaper recently held a poll which found that ‘most people’ are against party politics in council (24 September). I should have thought it far better that such a poll was concerned with the refusal of council to conduct twice-yearly clearances of unwanted household items; the seeming inability to introduce road repairs of high quality throughout Armidale Dumaresq; the absence of good street lighting; in general, a poll of residents’ opinions about what is necessary for improving living standards in Armidale Dumaresq. If party politics can squeeze money from the government (both Federal and State) to achieve this sort of local sustainability, let’s have party politics in council!
Now to Mr Klaas Woldring who says gay marriage legislation is supported by ‘a majority of Australians’ (same Armidale newspaper, Letters, September 24). Really? What is Mr Woldring’s assertion based on? That legalising gay marriage makes for a more equal and fair society? More equal and fair than the Australian society we have built? What has gay marriage to do with the advancement of our nation? Indeed, the popularisation of gay marriage will be responsible for eventually robbing future generations of the opportunity to work for our standing as a first-world country. Let that standing not be halted by the destructive results of political correctness and clamorous advocacy for gay marriage.
