I refer to an interview in the Tweed Coast Weekly of February 25, 2011, with the 22-year-old State Election Labor candidate for Tweed, Reece Byrnes.
He states that he grew up admiring Labor movers and shakers Gough Whitlam and Paul Keating. Whitlam’s tenure as PM ceased in 1975, approximately eight years before the birth of Reece Byrnes. Keating’s hold on the Prime Ministership was lost in 1996, when Reece would have been about eight.
I wonder who has been giving him the history lessons.
However, of more importance are the things that he wants to do for the Tweed.
Firstly he states “…how important it is to improve our existing health services and make sure our community has the resources it needs”. Reece then gives us an “I want” list, eg, best hospitals and health services, the best possible opportunities for happiness and jobs, a Tweed that will foster and nurture hard working families in a spirit of fairness and compassion, a Tweed where it is safe to walk at night, as a former student of the public education system, the best possible facilities and opportunities for his relatives and others.
He is clearly describing all the dismal failures of the NSW Labor Government over the last 16 years in health, education and policing in the Tweed.
