Many of the disabled and their carers may not be aware of a new Set-Down and Pick-Up facility for the Disabled installed by the Armidale Dumaresq Council in Faulkner Street.
Until recently, reasonable access to the Mall by private car has not been possible for those confined to wheelchairs or those with limited walking ability. The closest access has been from Moore Street or from Cinders Lane, both a block from the Mall and far too far for many of those with walking aids.
There is now a No Parking Zone established on the western side of Faulkner Street, next to the Post Office and in front of the Taxi rank, specifically so that drivers of cars displaying a Disability Parking Permit may use the space for up to five minutes to set down or pick up their disabled passenger.
Even though it has taken twelve months for this to be established, we should be grateful to the Armidale Dumaresq Council, first, for having finally recognised the need for the disabled to be able to use the facilities of our Mall and, second, for having understood the importance of social interaction in the health and well-being of those less fortunate.
