This week the Senate carried a motion I had lodged urging respect for our flag.
For too long we have watched as some have damaged, burnt or otherwise desecrated the flag on Australian soil as a form of protest. It is the ultimate in disrespect for a symbol of democracy and freedom.
Our flag has looked over our sons and daughters on the battlefield. Our flag is raised at Olympic Games and world sporting events as we look on with pride.
Let us not take our country’s values for granted. Respect our flag and I hope schools in particular continue to reinforce to our young people what it means to this nation and their future.
