I can’t believe that we as a nation are going to let women into frontline combat. There is a place for woman in our services, that such as a fighter pilots or on warships, but not on the frontline where it is to engage in close quarter combat. Women can’t match those physical requirements of a male with a 50kg pack, walking all night, then being fit to fight the next day. We as a nation would be horrified if a women in the combat zone was taken hostage and violently treated. And as for Julia Gillard backing this and saying women were equal, in this case I think not.
Just because women can kill, and be killed, and are exposed to war, often very directly, does not mean that they should be. This is not sexist and I believe most women actually don’t want to serve in the Infantry on the front line. Be careful what you ask for! Next time there’s a major conflict, men and women will be called up to fight, and will die in equal numbers on the battlefield. Is that what we want for women? How will our society benefit from such affirmative action. I see no gains on the behalf of women in this argument, only the freedom to kill and die alongside men.
