Regardless of the outcomes of the local government election, at least four current councillors will not be there for the next term: Mayor Peter Ducat, former Deputy Mayor Bruce Whan, Cr Brian Kelly and Cr Paul Harmer. They chose not to contest the election.
Cr Ducat clocked up twelve years on Council, seven consecutive years as Mayor and five as Deputy Mayor. This, I believe, makes him the longest continuous serving Mayor on Armidale Dumaresq Council. He worked tirelessly for our community and brought stability to Council during his term as Mayor. His wife Colleen’s significant contribution should also be recognised.
Cr Whan served thirteen years, three as Deputy Mayor. During his time on Council he served as chair of the Waste Management Committee and Economic Development Committee and made a very worthwhile contribution to the Domestic Energy Committee and the Creeklands.
Cr Brian Kelly served for twelve years, serving as Chair of the Traffic Committee. His understanding of roads, parking issues and the transport industry was beneficial to our Council and community.
Cr Paul Harmer served for four years and chaired the Tourism Committee. His experience in the Police Force was also beneficial, especially in matters of Youth Policy and Community Safety.
In total, these councillors gave 41 years of service to this community.
I for one salute their contribution.
Cr Jim Maher
