Tony Abbott is taking Australia to a new political low by using a massive fear campaign which he hopes will cause a political crisis, all to make himself Prime Minister. He doesn’t care about Australia.
Abbott is copying the powerful ‘Tea Party’ movement. The Tea Party phenomenon has had an enormous impact in recent US elections and it has spawned the most extreme right wing movement in the last 20 years, one consequence of which was the attempted assassination of the US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
While the Tea Party has Fox News, Tony Abbott and his cronies have the help of right wing radio shock jocks on 2GB and newspapers like The Australian and the Tweed Daily News.
All of this could pave the way for an Abbott government. If Abbott’s Tea Party style campaign succeeds it will stop action on climate change for a decade or more. This is time we simply do not have.
There is a significant body of people who understand the threat of climate change and who reject Abbott’s politics. Businesses are appalled with the uncertainty caused by Abbott’s populist mantra.
