As most people would know, Black Caviar narrowly won in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot, when jockey Like Nolen, sensing the horse was injured, eased back close to the finishing line.
Black Caviar is now back in Australia and, tucked away in the sports pages of The Australian [13/7] is a reported comment made by assistant trainer Tony Haydon: “Luke will never make that mistake again. He’ll push her to within an inch of her life from now on”.
If this attitude is widespread amongst the racing fraternity, it adds force to the call to ban whips, which are used to push a horse beyond the limits of its capability, with increased risk of injury and death.
