I was amused to hear Warren Polglase say that he should be Mayor for the Tweed Shire Council because he got the largest share (17 per cent) of the first preference votes. He didn’t profess this belief four years ago when Clr Katie Milne received about 20 per cent, nearly double the share of votes he received in that election. The Greens vote was lower overall statewide this year, so no surprise that Clr Milne’s vote dropped slightly. But the fact that the “conservative” grouping was supported by only 39 per cent of the vote shows that Clr Polglase has no mandate, either to be mayor or to build a new dam at Byrrill Creek. I hope that the newly elected Councillors will stop the self-serving posturing and get behind Mayor Barry Longland as he moves our region forward into a sustainable future.
