Please ring the bell

As a user of the city cycleway in its many roles, as a pedestrian to gain access to the town, as a cyclist for exercise and as a dog walker (on and off leash), I note the complaints from bike riders about their access to the shared path and the trouble caused by dog walkers and pedestrians in general.
It would seem to be an accepted fact that the cycleway is a shared path and, without this wonderful facility, I would no longer be able to cycle. I agree wholeheartedly that people with dogs off leash should be in control of their dogs, and dogs chasing cyclists is totally unacceptable.
At the same time, if cyclists could warn pedestrians of their approach by ringing the bell that most bikes are equipped with, it would give the pedestrians, with or without dogs, time to move over to one side to allow cyclists to pass.
As one of the elder citizens of the town, we are encouraged to exercise for our health, but often find it a danger to have to share the cycleway with cyclists who don’t give any warning of approach and then speed past, often abusing the walkers. As a cyclist, I am aware of the dangers of people walking in the middle of the path, but have found that giving ample warning makes for safe usage of the path for all involved.
Most of the time, I have found pedestrians, dog walkers and cyclists to be most courteous and friendly and use the cycleway in a responsible manner. Not all dog walkers, or pedestrians, or bike riders are irresponsible, but we all suffer for the few who are.
We have such a beautiful cycleway and parklands, it is a pleasure to be able to enjoy a quiet walk or bike ride in this delightful city. Such a pity to have ‘road rage’ spill over on to the cycleway. As a relative newcomer to this town, I appreciate what a great facility council has provided us with and would love to be able to use it in cooperation with all other users.
